Critical Out‑of‑Bounds Write in GStreamer H.266 Codec Parser (CVE‑2026‑3086) Enables Remote Code Execution

What It Is – A newly disclosed out‑of‑bounds write flaw in GStreamer’s H.266 (VVC) codec parser allows an attacker to overwrite memory and execute arbitrary code in the context of the compromised process. The vulnerability is tracked as CVE‑2026‑3086 and carries a CVSS 7.8 (High).

Exploitability – No public exploit code is known, but the vulnerability is trivially exploitable once an attacker can feed crafted video data to a vulnerable GStreamer instance. The CVSS vector indicates low attack complexity but required interaction with the library (local‑triggered).

Affected Products – GStreamer (all versions containing the vulnerable H.266 parser). The flaw affects any downstream product that embeds GStreamer for media handling – video‑conferencing tools, streaming servers, IoT devices, automotive infotainment, and many SaaS media platforms.

TPRM Impact – Because GStreamer is a widely‑used open‑source multimedia framework, many third‑party vendors rely on it. A compromised component can become a supply‑chain foothold, potentially exposing downstream customers to data leakage, ransomware drop‑offs, or broader service disruption.

Recommended Actions –

  1. Patch Immediately – Deploy the upstream commit 025d59c (or later) that fixes the parser validation.
  2. Inventory – Identify all internal and third‑party applications that bundle GStreamer and verify their version.
  3. Test – Run regression tests with crafted H.266 streams to confirm the fix.
  4. Monitor – Enable logging for GStreamer library loads and watch for anomalous media‑stream processing.
  5. Engage Vendors – Notify any SaaS or hardware partners that embed GStreamer and request confirmation of remediation.
